Paulina Constancia, from
the island of Cebu, the Philippines, is an artist and poet with a penchant
for experimentation. Her creative spirit delights in painting with acrylics
as it does with words. She has exhibited her art and poetry in the
Philippines, the Netherlands, Mexico and in various cities in the U.S.
and Canada. It was during a creative self-exile in the colonial town
of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico in 1999 that Paulina fell
in love with a medium that from her experience best conjugated and captured
the fascinating tones and tides of human emotion the Spanish language.
Thus, it is no wonder that Paulina has opted to make
this book, Open Arms/Brazos Abiertos, her first collection
of poetry, a bilingual edition. This serves as a kind of tribute to
a language that has given her heart a new alternative voice.
This book holds bits and
pieces of Paulina’s life journeys between 1997-2002. Most of these
poems were written for a particular work of art. These images are
not included in this first edition.

Una Introduccion
Abraza la vida y el amor dulcemente,

Paulina Constancia, de la isla de Cebu en las Filipinas, es una artista
y poeta con inclinacion a los experimentos. Su esp’ritu creador se
deleita igualmente en pintar con acr’licos que con palabras. Ha expuesto
su arte visual y su poes’a en las Filipinas, Holanda, Mexico y varias
ciudades en los Estados Unidos y Canada. Fue en Mexico, en 1999, durante
un auto-exilio creador en la ciudad colonial de San Miguel de Allende
en el estado de Guanajuato, que ella se enamoro de un medio de expresion
que en su experiencia conjugaba y capturaba mejor los matices y mareas
de la emocion humana: la lengua espanola. No es de extranarse, entonces,
que Paulina haya optado por hacer de este libro, Open Arms/Brazos
Abiertos, su primera coleccion de poesia, una edicion bilingue.
Para que sirva de homenaje a una lengua que le ha dado a su corazon
una voz nueva y alternativa.
Este libro contiene pedacitos de las excursiones de la vida de Paulina
entre los anos 1997 y 2002. La mayoria de sus poemas fueron escritos
para una obra de arte en particular. Las imagenes de estas obras no
han sido inclu’das en esta primera edicion.
